1187: Episode One

I have many love and hate issues with 1187, while I mostly enjoyed the progression between locations, characters and how they present a Half Life 2 prequel, it tends to fall flat on the lack of direction, some odd design decisions and other issues presented in the review.

Aether

While on the easy side, Aether is a solid map which offers nice outdoor visuals and straight forward gameplay with the occasional minor twist.

Call In

Linear mod with a slow and lifeless start in terms of gameplay, which picks up halfway upon reaching the Combine base. The mod has some good visuals and the outdoor sections seem to be his strong point, Ludvig shows promise for future releases.

Comatose

It’s good to experiment and the mod starts out well, only to lose that touch later on which causes it to suffer from problems concerning gameplay and misses out on some polish.

Halloweenville

Perhaps too many maps rely on darkness for its scares, but the pack might have something for everyone to enjoy. Missing Person is my favourite for the overall effort and experience, while Dark Bad made use of an interesting concept and could possibly be polished up and turned into something bigger.

Human Error

Solid release as a whole with suitable new content to fit your role as Civil Protection and to add variety while successfully sticking with this throughout. Sometimes gameplay and design can get a bit stale but there’s some fun to be had.

Mission Improbable

While it not exactly a mod that provides a lot of challenge, the levels are paced well and are gorgeous to look at, with several detailed environments, nice use of colour correction to spice up the atmosphere and the addition of many smaller ideas to keep things fresh.

Nightmare House 2

An impressive feat at creating an immersive sequel with enough quality that I forget I was even playing a mod. The visuals, presentation and effects are great with a nice atmosphere, while the scare elements become predictable.

Research and Development

Excellent variety of puzzle based gameplay, all wrapped within the bounds of superb level design, an extremely well done industrial theme that consists with plenty of variety.

Whoopservatory

Despite the new puzzle mechanic not being utilised as much as it could have, the map is presented well as a whole with excellent design and lighting which feels like you’re really there.
