Three challenging and balanced maps with top notch design in each.
Browsing Doom Themes – UAC Tech Base
An action packed journey which offers enough variety per level to remain interesting, from tight environments to sprawling terrain with hordes of hungry demons and plenty of supplies. Visuals are solid all round which tend to experiment with different styles of the same themes and texture choices.
Although an interesting piece from the early mapping scene, UAC_DEAD today is an easy romp with average level design, despite some of the innovative visual touches thrown in there for its time.
Galaxia is a strong classic from ’94 and has become an instant favourite of mine. The setting is immersive, atmospheric and combat is both tense and fun. If you haven’t already done so, give this wad a spin one day.
GOING DOWN is an excellent megawad and has become an all time favourite release. Themes, visuals and gameplay elements are diverse across all 32 maps and comes with a distinctive soundtrack. High enemy counts wasn’t the only driving factor that made combat difficult, but mouldy’s own understanding how to pressure players and manipulate them into unwanted situations, which comes across as a signature style in my eyes.
Not much to say about this map, but it is a very well detailed short level (around 2 minutes) worth giving a go.
Balanced gameplay, good flow and some tough spots with a decent desigh throughout.
DeBruyne pieces together a consistently designed set of maps and approaches the moon and space theme fairly well. The focus on large hordes and a variety of indoor and outdoor combat offers a decent level of challenge and attempts to keep each map fresh to play.
The interconnectivity and non-linear nature toward gameplay in POLYGON allows players to progress at their own pace and choose which places to tackle first. Ultra Violence offers the most enemy variation and can be tough as nails with the large number of hitscan based foes and limited health supplies.
ROTGS is a linear experience, but has a well placed mystery and tense atmosphere, with short battles against small groups of foes while occasionally adding a twist at specific points during gameplay. While enjoyable, it was a little on the short side.
Simplistic in design and largely scaled by nature, RUNBUDDY won’t be a challenging experience on HMP due to the open arena, so it would be advised to jump straight in UV for those who seek one. The wad is otherwise an enjoyable romp that throws a lot of spice to keep combat varied.
An entertaining wad with great design and fantastic, yet tricky and challenging gameplay – Very action packed.
One of the best Zdoom wads, can get tiresome but has great design and gameplay.
A great ZDoom map, with lots of action which is challenging.
TREFINRY offers a well presented remake of E2M3, expanding on the original map in many ways with larger, more detailed environments. Gameplay is limited on supplies and focuses on players managing their resources carefully which might not suit everyone’s tastes. Couldn’t engage entirely in the combat and instead found that many choices for new enemies tend to detract from the overall experience.
Another great wad by Dutch Devil with fantastic detail and very well made unlinear gameplay.
