Crimson Canyon

Author: J S Graham | Released: March 21st 2005

An action packed journey which offers enough variety per level to remain interesting, from tight environments to sprawling terrain with hordes of hungry demons and plenty of supplies. Visuals are solid all round which tend to experiment with different styles of the same themes and texture choices.

Decade

Author: Russell Pearson | Released: June 3rd 2004

A well designed map, with very hard gameplay.

Doomsday of UAC

Author: Leo Martin Lim | Released: June 23rd 1994

Although an interesting piece from the early mapping scene, UAC_DEAD today is an easy romp with average level design, despite some of the innovative visual touches thrown in there for its time.

E1M3 : Toxin Refinery

Author: Dutch Devil | Released: July 29th 2005

A good remake with good design but too easy gameplay.

Galaxia

Author: Pavel Hodek | Released: July 28th 1994

Galaxia is a strong classic from ’94 and has become an instant favourite of mine. The setting is immersive, atmospheric and combat is both tense and fun. If you haven’t already done so, give this wad a spin one day.

Genesis of Descent

Author: Hobomaster22 | Released: March 27th 2007

Enjoyable, lengthy and well designed wad.

Going Down

Author: mouldy | Released: November 2nd 2014

GOING DOWN is an excellent megawad and has become an all time favourite release. Themes, visuals and gameplay elements are diverse across all 32 maps and comes with a distinctive soundtrack. High enemy counts wasn’t the only driving factor that made combat difficult, but mouldy’s own understanding how to pressure players and manipulate them into unwanted situations, which comes across as a signature style in my eyes.

Hanger 27

Author: Dutch Devil | Released: October 29th 2005

Not much to say about this map, but it is a very well detailed short level (around 2 minutes) worth giving a go.

ic2005

Author: Ian Cunnings | Released: December 27th 2005

Balanced gameplay, good flow and some tough spots with a decent desigh throughout.

Lunatic

Author: Paul DeBruyne | Released: August 11th 2011

DeBruyne pieces together a consistently designed set of maps and approaches the moon and space theme fairly well. The focus on large hordes and a variety of indoor and outdoor combat offers a decent level of challenge and attempts to keep each map fresh to play.

Polygon Base

Author: Rick Lipsey | Released: January 24th 1996

The interconnectivity and non-linear nature toward gameplay in POLYGON allows players to progress at their own pace and choose which places to tackle first. Ultra Violence offers the most enemy variation and can be tough as nails with the large number of hitscan based foes and limited health supplies.

Realm of the Green Soul

Author: Lexus Alyus | Released: September 23rd 2002

ROTGS is a linear experience, but has a well placed mystery and tense atmosphere, with short battles against small groups of foes while occasionally adding a twist at specific points during gameplay. While enjoyable, it was a little on the short side.

RTC-3057: Blue Hub1

Author: RCT Team | Released: July 26th 2004

One of the greatest mods out for ZDoom yet.

Run Buddy

Author: Michael Krause | Released: April 30th 1998

Simplistic in design and largely scaled by nature, RUNBUDDY won’t be a challenging experience on HMP due to the open arena, so it would be advised to jump straight in UV for those who seek one. The wad is otherwise an enjoyable romp that throws a lot of spice to keep combat varied.

Scuba Steve’s: Action DooM

An entertaining wad with great design and fantastic, yet tricky and challenging gameplay – Very action packed.

Simplicity

Author: Agent Spork | Released: ~2005

One of the best Zdoom wads, can get tiresome but has great design and gameplay.

Sin City 2: The Satan Complex

Author: Ed Cripps | Released: January 20th 2003

A good map, but the first in the series was better.

Temple of Chaos 2: Warped Reality

Author: Agent Spork | Released: April 16th 2005

A great ZDoom map, with lots of action which is challenging.

The Refinery

Author: Daniel "Tormentor667" Gimmer | Released: August 31st 2012

TREFINRY offers a well presented remake of E2M3, expanding on the original map in many ways with larger, more detailed environments. Gameplay is limited on supplies and focuses on players managing their resources carefully which might not suit everyone’s tastes. Couldn’t engage entirely in the combat and instead found that many choices for new enemies tend to detract from the overall experience.

Total Control

Author: Dutch Devil | Released: November 10th 2005

Another great wad by Dutch Devil with fantastic detail and very well made unlinear gameplay.

Triple Challenge

Author: Surreily | Released: December 19th 2006

Decent design, and enjoyable gameplay in three unrelated maps.
