News 005: “Duke in Progress” Category

I have recently added this new section to the categories where I will try to collect Duke3D projects under construction as I possibly can, located in one simple section as each post will include information, media, links or sources and downloads to do with the said project. However there will be some obvious problems when there is a lack of information, media or title for the project and that is where you come in to either supply any missing information or correct me of any mistakes found. Projects listed that get released will have their titles edited to have an explanation mark ( ! ) so they appear at the top of the list. Those will then be removed after a month, except ongoing projects ofcourse. Projects that get abandoned will just be removed. I would also like to note that the posts will not appear on the front page and will be dated incorrectly for that reason ( as it is the only way to do so as far as I know )

Haven’t had a full decision about working on this section however, but I’ll have to see how often I update it and keep it on track. Things could change.

Another Timeless Night

Gameplay
Short, action packed map mostly against Commanders and Battlelords. At first everything appears calm, until the aliens attack yet again, ruinimg the peaceful little town, causing havoc at the shopping plaza and train station as it falls apart. Action is balanced out with fair number of enemies and small waves to fight against. Plenty of supplies around and enough room to maneuver during battle, all around keeping everything an enjoyable experience. Some may experience crashing towards the end.

Design
Reconisable mapping style from Alejandro himself delivering a detailed map, mostly set indoors with a typical light and dark brown colour scheme seen in most of his releases. Structural wise is as always decent keeping a solid design throughout the plaza, realistic approaches for each room type or exterior setting. Texturing is aligned and used well throughout. Good spritework is present as always with great lighting and other small details here and there making everything feel a lot more three dimensional and realistic.

Conclusion
Enjoyable action packed map with great design throughout.

Incinerator

Summary
In modern nights, gods from an alternate plane select the ultimate warrior among the human race to defeat the Faction of the Fallen. Lacking the capacity for violence possessed by man, they select a mortal human because he has no such restraints from wielding both the magics of light and of darkness to defend the gods and the human race itself from the terrors that stalk us all in the night.

Alien Wipeout

Gameplay
Very short, but sweet with a few fights here and there. There is no set objective this time round, where you get from one end of the alien space ship to the escape pods. Simple interaction throughout, unlocking a few fields and doors. Action is balanced but numbers of enemies is small, and plenty of supplies around to last.

Design
Using a grey, green and brown colour scheme, an alien shuttle is the set location for this map that has plenty of structural details, good texturing, creating an alien feel very well. There were some other interesting little things here and there such as the tentacules on the side of the ship and small replica of the town from a previous map. Lots of dark areas with bright green lights and wierd alien devices at work, the ambience creating more life to the map.

Conclusion
Short yet enjoyable map with great design.

Operation Na Pali

Gameplay
First of all, this is a huge mission pack that ranges across thirty seven different maps all linked together and creating a development of story through the use of voice acting, translator messages and cutscenes bringing several scenes a lot more to life. An emergency message is transfered to the Vortex Rikers 2 as it travels through space, where three members from the crashed Vortex Rikers 1 contacting for help on Na Pali and it’s your mission to track them down. Upon your arrive however, you are shot by the enemy and taken away to a Skaarj prison. The gameplay then takes place here. Once you take control, your character will start to talk about his current situation and does this quite a bit throughout each of the missions. He will sometimes say the odd corny phrase after killing certain enemies or reveal what the player must do to continue on. I found this a problem in a few places as it removed the ability to find out yourselve, giving away the answer too quickly but it’s not too common.
