Resident Evil 4

Story
Six years have passed since Raccoon City was destroyed and the government has dismantled the Umbrella Corporation from the inside-out. But the terror is not over. Now a U.S. Agent, former Raccoon Police Officer Leon Kennedy has been dispatched on a mission to Europe to save the President’s daughter from a “crazed organization” that bares a striking behavioral resemblance to creatures found in the Arklay Mountains. Is there a connection between these foes and the horrible nightmares from the past?

General
Resident Evil 4 is a lot different than it’s previous prequels in different aspects throughout the game. No more zombies this time around, as you’ll be fighting off villagers infected by the Las Plagas and other such mutants, some small and some large. Instead of being slow and dumb, the Ganados can also run and will attack you wherever you go as they’ll climb ladders, jump through windows and even bust open doors. They also carry weapons such as pitchforks, dynamite, knifes, even a chainsaw and a few others which get introduced much later in the game. Sometimes you can have the upperhand as they do these things by knocking the ladder back down or making them drop their explosive killing themselfs. The game is split into chapters, with smaller segments inbetween where you will travel from the villages, across a large lake, through a castle and typically like in every Resident Evil title, some high tech area. To help you progress or search areas, the action button key is displayed onscreen at the bottom to indicate if you can interact with something such as an item, switch or door, pretty useful but some exploration is lost unlike the previous titles. During a later part of the game you will have Ashley follow you throughout major parts where she can be taken away by the enemy if you dont keep an eye on her as it can result in a failed mission. This can be easily avoided by shooting the enemy down. Much later you will also take control of Ashley to do some puzzles to get to Leon. Cutscenes and the flow of the game expand and detail the story each time you progress learning more and more each time, which it should, with plenty of twists but a few typical moments.

Difficulty
I’ll start with the puzzles, these aren’t exactly hard at all as they are very obvious what you must do and the items required would be fairly close by anyway which makes this area of the gameplay far too easy unlike the previous titles, they could have added a break from the action into more thinking which was a bit of a shame. No for the fights, it can have some variety and depends on the actual enemy you’re up against. The Ganados and Monks aren’t much trouble at all and can be taken down with a few shots, however the ones with sheilds can be a problem, but getting them from behind isn’t too difficult. The only time things can get hectic is when a horde of them are crowding around either you or Ashley. Other enemies late in the game do however get more harder to fight against and some which can really give you a scare when you’re not expecting them around the corner, these ones however are much later in the game but they all have a weakness to help beat them quickly. I found the boss fights were fairly simple most of the time, since their weakness can get very obvious and all you really have to is avoid it’s attack, take some shots at it’s weak spot and follow that simple pattern. Overall, the difficult can get tough but sometimes simple at other times. Still enjoyable though.

Controls / Battle System
I’ve only played the Gamecube version, however they’re similar to the controls used in Resident Evil also for the Gamecube. Aiming again is the right shoulder button like in all the other titles. Now you don’t have to hold a button to run anymore since Leon will job at a fast enough pace to get to places quickly and avoid running into enemies. And no more camera angles this time round as it is constantly behind Leon and the improvement in the aiming system is a great plus, you can easily take headshots or shoot their leg and give them a good kick with the action button after running up to them before they get up. Another key feature how weapons are obtained, you wont be finding bigger and stronger weapons as you progress since this time you will collect money and valuable items to sell to buy your equipment. There’s a wide selection of stuff to buy from automatics and shotguns, to sniper rifles and scops. But that’s not all you can do, weapons can also be upgraded in many ways through different levels, each time getting more expensive. Reloading speed, capacity, power can all be upgraded, therefore making that starting pistol rather deadly. Not only can weapons be upgrade but by mixing yellow herbs with other ones and using it can increase your maximum health limit and the same with Ashley as well. Grenades and flashbangs are another nice touch to the gameplay and prove rather useful in tight situations as well. Another extra addition to the gameplay are the quick responses where you must press a certain button or two as it shows on the screen. If these are failed you could possible die or risk a lot of health being lost. Some even require you to rapidly press the button as well but clearly indicated onscreen. The knife in the game is a lot more useful and can help conserve your ammunition as you will need it much later in the game, however I will not spoil in this review. The best approach is to get your enemy on the ground by taking a small shot at their leg and knifing them as they lay for a few seconds, best way to save precious supplies.

Design / Music / Sound
A complete three dimensional enviroment without the use of either static backgrounds or camera angles. Everywhere is full of detail making you feel more immersed in the game, as it looks realistic looking too. The village for example have old, poor looking wooden shacks with a lonely, dead looking forest around them. The castle is also another great example, it’s interiors have fantastic and inspiring architecture throughout with a great style to it. Groans and moans from zombies are no more as the Ganados will shout several phrases, while trying to kill you, in spanish which also sets the location more, these can eventually get old though. There’s sound everywhere in the game both ambient and generic, with tension building and great music playing in the background. However, as usual in save rooms, a calm tune is played but this time with a nice, original yet unusual style to it.

Replay Value
I’m not too sure about other versions of the game, however I know after completing the game once can open a few extras for your next game. Unlocked is a new costume and some new weapons to play with and all the items you had when you saved at the end will be carried on over here too. There are also two extra modes which can be quite fun to play but I never got into them much although others may.

Overall Conclusion
Great game, lots of action in a detailed enviroment with lots of twists throughout. However, not as a Resident Evil title, since it could have been a brand new game altogether. And the fact I prefer the classic Resident Evil style, but still a fantastic game.

DoomEd

Gameplay
There’s not a lot of action in this one, but still a small amount with zombies. The main objective of the modifacation is to learn and solve puzzles to get out of the facility. These puzzles are not hard to solve at all and the action is very easy to fight through, plenty of supplies given to the player. There’s also a nice quiz you can take part of, where you must answer five questions to win the items in the storage room. But this part is bugged and you get the same questions repeated to you at times. New voice acting, rather fitting with the date it is set and sets the mood a little different, but some do drag on a little bit.

Design
The train at the start is very well made, but the rest of the map is rather average but nothing that puts you off while playing. Texture choices are set to a choice of white bricks and concrete with a few others that are used well. Lighting was moderate, some intense red lighting though which looked a little bad. Use of props were moderate and the map contained little effects such as steam and electricity to give it more of a destoyed look.

Overall Conclusion
Good map to learn while you play with easy yet moderate fights.

The Final Missions

Gameplay
Short map pack that replaces the first episode which is easy throughout. There were a few tough spots due to modified ammo capacity but nothing extremely hard, and at other times the fights were far too easy. Main objective for each map is to press some buttons or find some keycards and get to the end. Some levels were really short, while others were a decent length.

Design
A below average design, so nothing much to expect here with the misaligned textures and basic structure, some doors were even too thick. Although the rooms aren’t empty with some good choices of texturing and at least the area was reconisable for what it represented.

Overall Conclusion
Short map pack with easy and tough spots throughout.

Roch Island

Introduction
A tribute to Pascal Rouaud’s Roch series. Map also contains an optional skybox.

Gameplay
Long and action packed throughout the entire map the also remains balanced, fun and exciting. Everywhere you venture will have packs of enemies to fight, indoors and outdoors in the open streets. Ofcourse, such a map will need plenty of supplies and this one doesn’t fail that either. Everything is balanced keeping it fair and enjoyable, with a few tough spots but nothing fustrating. Lots of keycard hunting, enemy respawning and explosions destroying some of the buildings are also a part of this map, keeping the length and action going on without boring the player. It’s easy to get lost but you’ll eventually get back on track after finding the places you need keycards for, but some places require a little more thought and browsing around. Map also contains some light humour and a new small tune made by the Oostrum brothers, depending on your taste can be fun or annoying. Either way you can break the speaker to get a comment thrown back at you.

Design
No where lacks any detail since it’s located everywhere within the map. Structure of the map has a lot of shape in it, with different angled walls so the map doesn’t look square and achieves it well too. Tall buildings also don’t lack detail with a few small ones here and there with chimneys to match. Some interiors however were a bit cramped, especially with all the detail inside them, but nothing that becomes a real bother. Texturing and spritework is fantastic but expected considering the authors who worked on the map, which is also everywhere in the map to give it a more three dimensional look. Textures and sprites are mixed together with a few palette changes to give the map more variety and looks consistent, without anything looking out of place. Lighting is also used everywhere and looks realistic where it has been used, especially indoors. However, the brightness of the sky outside didn’t match how dark the city was.

Overall Conclusion
Great design with balanced and action packed gameplay.

Roch 1

Gameplay
Quite action packed set in large city area which is balanced out well with more than enough supplies around. Some useful steroids to make your journey across the map much quicker and a lot of secret places to look around for with hidden goodies. A lot of ambience has been used around the map that makes the city feel more alive, with the moving cars around the streets helping this. The main objective of the map is to find the keys and press buttons in order to get to the end.

Design
Some structures and buildings look average but the texturing helps make it look better. Many areas in the map have a different use the textures used giving them more of a purpose and looks good, with a few palette changes to help create a new set and the lighting is all around the map, with some realistic looking ones here and there.

Overall Conclusion
The first of a great series. Balanced gameplay throughout.

Roch 2

Gameplay
Like the first in the series, action packed but shorter in length. The gameplay is still balanced, and theres plenty of supplies around. However commanders inside the small rooms was pushing it a little bit though. Again there are more secrets to look for with useful goodies to help you on the mission. Objectives are the same as before, to find the keycards and press buttons to find the exit.

Design
Structure is a lot better here with more shape in the buildings, both indoors and outdoors. Texturing and spritework has also improved and blends very well in the level. A few wall texture usage didn’t look too great, but a majority of it did. Some interiors were cramped to move around it, which also affected the gameplay as enemies could squeeze through some of the areas.

Overall ConclusionBalanced and actioned packed with great design. A few cramped spots indoors that affects gameplay.

Roch 3

Gameplay
Another balanced and action packed map set in a small city. Again there is plenty of ammunition and health to locate, with several other secret places. Some fights indoors are cramped again, but some hidden enemies around corners was a nice touch. Again, keycards and button searching is the objective, but made a little more interesting using a radio design, and pointing towards the area it unlocks.

Design
Much better than the previous, with a lot more structure and better texturing that blends well together. Good choices that creates something new with realistic lighting and shading used throughout the map giving it a more three dimensional look. More cramped interiors again which is shame, but designed well.

Overall Conclusion
Another balanced, action packed map in the series.

Roch Secret Level

Gameplay
Moderate amount of action this time round that is rather easy to beat. Plenty of supplies as per usual with a few secrets to find yet again. Keycard hunting and button pressing is the main objective of the map, and there is nothing really too challenging in the map.

Design
Set at night along the seaside with a few theme rides going one in the central area. The map is like a mix of the first three Roch maps with some good texturing. Lighting makes the map look great though, due to its theme the bright lights and decent shading adds to the atmosphere a lot more than the design does.

Overall Conclusion
Moderate and easy action, with decent design.

Roch 4

Gameplay
Action packed at a moderate pace this time, and balanced nicely. The objective is also a little different to add a bit more fun to the map. You’re taking part of a game show where you must find 3 red and blue keys and using them in the main game show room. You’ll earn prizes for each key you find and you must try to get inside the mansion to continue on the mission. Ofcourse, some of the keys cause enemies to respawn which adds more to the action.

Design
Design is fantastic and the structure throughout is a lot better than before, especially the starting building and mansion exterior. Texturing is as always very good with good mixes and palette changes, however each area now looks more varied and has it’s one define look. Lighting is again very good, with nothing much to complain about. There’s also a nice stairway using a few tricks to make it look three dimensional and the advertisments keep getting more interesting to watch them split apart and change.

Overall Conclusion
Interesting keycard idea, moderate and balanced gameplay with fantastic design

Roch 5

Gameplay
Goes back to it’sbalanced, action packed gameplay, keycard and button hunting with a few little extras like explosions and some areas to put a little thought on how to get around things. Again, interior battles are cramped, but a few have enough room, map has several secrets like always. The fights can get more tougher in this one than before, but still moderate in everything you need such as ammo and health.

Design
More browns and greys used this time round with an industrial look to one half of the city which breaks the theme up than in previous maps. Everywhere is detailed enough to look good and realistic, but some areas as mentioned above can be cramped. Good texturing and sprite work as always with some interesting usage of sound now. Examples being are the squeaky door and other common doors.

Overall Conclusion
Balanced action packed gameplaym however cramped in some interiors, with great design.
